PATRIMOINE JUIF D'ALCAZARQUIVIR

Save the Jewish Cemetery of Alcazarquivir

Let us come together to restore the cemetery, preserve the dignity of our ancestors, and pass on the heritage of our community to future generations.

If you have received this appeal, it is because your family is part of the history of the Jewish community of Alcazarquivir.

In the town’s old Jewish cemetery lie members of our families – fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, and generations who came before us. The surviving tombstones are sometimes the last witnesses to their existence and to the history of the families who lived in the town.

Today, however, the cemetery is gradually deteriorating. Many tombstones are broken or damaged, graves have been covered over the years by soil and vegetation, some parts of the site have become inaccessible, and the lack of adequate fencing and protection is putting the cemetery at risk.

It is still possible to save it.

For this purpose, we have created a committee of descendants of the community, operating within a formally established association. Our goal is to restore the cemetery as well as the sanctuary of the Tzaddik Rabbi Yehuda Jabali, preserve the graves and tombstones, and ensure that this sacred place is safeguarded for future generations.

What do we hope to accomplish?

• Clean the cemetery and remove the vegetation that has overgrown it.

• Uncover graves that have been covered over and have disappeared over the years.

• Identify, clean, repair, and restore the tombstones wherever possible.

• Improve the site and access paths so that the cemetery can be visited with dignity and in safety.

• Ensure the regular maintenance of the cemetery once the restoration work has been completed.

To make this project a reality, we need your help.

Every donation, whatever the amount, makes a tangible contribution to saving the cemetery and preserving the memory of our family members. It is also an act of “Hessed Shel Emet” – an enduring act of kindness and respect toward those who can no longer care for their own place of rest.

We invite you to dedicate your donation to the memory of members of your family. Their names will be included on the project’s memorial list and, whenever possible, we will seek to establish a connection between the families and the graves and tombstones documented in the cemetery.

The association will operate with complete transparency. Donors will receive regular updates on the funds raised and the progress of the work, together with photographs of the site, so that you can see how your donation is directly contributing to the restoration and preservation efforts.

We would also be very grateful if you would personally share this appeal with your brothers and sisters, cousins, children and grandchildren, as well as with any other descendants of the Jews of Alcazarquivir whom you may know.

This cemetery belongs to our collective memory. If every family makes a contribution, together we can save it and preserve it for generations to come.

Join us in preserving the dignity of our ancestors and the heritage of the Jewish community of Alcazarquivir.

With our deepest gratitude,

Alcazarquivir Jewish Heritage Association
